Three full days of fishing at Guadalupe Island paid off with tuna and some lunker yellowtail for 23 anglers on the Intrepid with skipper Kevin Osborne on the Larry Brown/Avet Reels charter.

Norin Grancell of Beverly Hills won first place for an 87.8-pound tuna. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 1/0 Mutu ringed hook tied to 30-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 30-pound Izorline Premier line and 65-pound Spectra. He fished with an Avet MXL 6-4 reel and a Daiwa six and a half-foot rod.

Onik Alajajian, son of Avet owner Harry Alajajian, is 14. He won second place for a tuna just four tenths of a pound smaller than Grancell's, at 87.4 pounds. Harry said it came on a prototype small two-speed reel.

"It's my second tuna ever, and my best one," said Onik. He goes to Serrahaian High School and plays basketball and volleyball.

Mike Tomkiel of San Clemente won third place for a 71-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.
