Joe D'Aquisto had the Red Rooster III for a four-day trip, so he took his 31 anglers offshore for a day and then to the big island. They ended up with a respectable trip, catching over 100 yellowfin and 60-plus yellowtail, as well as an assortment of other fish, including some bluefin and albacore.
Henry Cortez of Orange County won first place in the jackpot for a 61.9-pound tuna. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He used 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 40-pound blue Izorline on a Trinidad 20 reel and a Calstar nine-foot rod.
Steve Hiranatsu of Orange won second place for a 59.5-pounder, and Ryan Scott of Huntington Beach got third place for a 57.9-pound yellowfin tuna.
