Captain Wasano struck early beginning the annual Island Tackle 3 day with an epic night hit for 18 bluefin in the 120 - 180 pound class. When opportunity knocked the boys were ready primed from plenty of experience in recent years, months, weeks, and days past. That in itself is an amazing detail. The fact that such fishing, right on our doorstep, has become commonplace is a stunning turn of events in contrast to the most dire scenarios forecast a mere eight or ten years ago.
We have so much to be thankful for. While we are clearly at the mercy of the ocean and fish gods, and venture predictions at high risk of looking the fool, I have to say that my confidence about not only this season, but many seasons offshore to come, is very high. The abundance this year of smaller bluefin in the 15-30 pound class is multitudes greater than what we observed last season. And the quantity of bluefin in the 50 - 200 pound range speaks for itself. Currently spread across seventy or eighty square miles of ocean, including to almost the surfline at times in North County San Diego, the volume of fish in our waters defies all previous notions.
It's a good time to be an angler in this region; long range, half day, and everything in between. That said we are currently putting the finishing touches on the Royal Star Spring, Summer, and Fall 2022 schedule. Royal Star anglers on 2021 voyages will have priority booking for the same voyages in 2022. After each 2021 voyage returns a short window for those anglers will be provided then the schedule will be offered to anglers on a first come first serve basis with all reservations secured by deposit.
Admin aside look for reports from Captain Wasano to continue as two more full days and nights of fishing await his anglers on Royal Star. They are not only enjoying fantastic fishing but perfect weather and conditions too. What a combo! Photo today features Royal Star angler Ray Lane with the first fish of the trip, this beautiful, 130 pound class Pacific Bluefin Tuna.
