The summer hiking conditions are as good as they ever get as far access goes. Some wildflowers are lining the trails and it is simply spectacular out there. Our guests made use of all five of the area trailheads and the views are epic. It is a bit buggy out there so plan accordingly. We're also expecting thunderstorms for the next 5-7 days so get on the trail early if you're a day hiker.

Plenty of JMT and PCT folks as well as a few Sierra High Route hikers have come through to resupply and there is very little snow on the passes. Muir Pass seems to be the pass with the most and even that pass has meager snow to cross.

Just a quick reminder to overnight folks to please adhere to posted parking signs so there is enough room for day hikers and anglers.

No fish have been stocked at South Lake this season, the water is simply too low to get fish to the water, even with our 80ft of stocking tube. Obviously, the fishing has slowed so we recommend anglers spend their time elsewhere.

The level has been a huge disappointment as the lake continues to drop. Unfortunately, the snowpack and runoff forecasting didn't quite hit the mark state-wide, and our basin is no different. There just wasn't as much snow back there as we all thought and the variable weather in April and May didn't help the runoff.

​

Long story short, we DO NOT plan on having any boat rentals up at South Lake for 2021. We are lobbying water managers to store extra water over at Lake Sabrina and pull extra water from South Lake so one of the two reservoirs is close to normal, but we'll have to wait and see.

​

The water level is low but boat rentals are available and the DFW has wisely been putting the South Lake fish over there so that is our pick of the week. Jigs, nightcrawlers, Berkley Gulp Pinched Crawlers and Thomas Buoyants are all good choices. The water level at the dam looks intimidating but once you get out onto the main body of the lake, it is still awesome out there and there are plenty of fish for those who know how to find them.

Lots of little Brook Trout on the chew with the occasional Rainbow and Brown but it's been super quiet up there.

 

Great fishing for fly anglers this week, especially for Browns who are starting to hit dries. Try a large black ant or yellow humpy pattern.

 

A stocking on Friday has this place pretty crowded, but still, it's the best spot for float tubers and those shore anglers who want easy shore access.

The spillway project slated for August has been rescheduled so we're expecting this to be a steady fishery throughout the summer.

 

Pretty slow and no stocking that we're aware of.

Periodic DFW plants are happening, including last week, however the amounts are pretty thin given shortagesr at the state hatcheries. Idaho fish are on the way so things are looking up....
