Story
I had to wrap my arms around my first exotic of 2009 and what better vessel than the Pacific Quest! With the White Seabass hitting the scoreboard all week we were destined to find something! Unfortunately there was tremendous pressure on the fish due to the White Seabass tournament out of Catalina Island. Captain Josh Walton and Crew greeted and boarded the six determined anglers aboard the beautiful sportfishing vessel. Both bait tanks were plugged with live squid and the plan was to bypass the parking lot at Catalina and go straight to San Clemente in hopes of exotics. I can't say enough about the Pacific Quest and its Crew. Captain Josh's persistence was amazing as we made multiple moves in hopes of catching the elusive Grey Ghost. We pulled on some angry Calico Bass as well as a few Bat Rays, Sheephead throughout the early morning. We ran over some promising marks in deeper water and Rafael Cervantes latched onto a very nice Lingcod. We were back at it working down the East end of the island and even hit a short halibut in a drift late in the day. We enjoyed a great dinner prepared by Chef Jason and some of us stayed at the rail while others hit the sack so we could fish the early morning grey light. I was amazed at how hard we fished! The first day we must have fished well over 19 hours and we were all up throwing live squid at the kelp in the morning. Rick Cha latched onto the first fish and this one headed straight for the kelp! Unfortunately it was lost, however we knew there would be more. I managed to hook the next fish on the dropper loop and this one also went straight for the kelp. Captain Josh worked his magic and tugged the fish out and the fight was on once again. Perfect gaff done by Josh and we now had our first Yellow. After things slowed down, we decided to end our day Rockfishing. We had an excellent group of anglers, a very comfortable and super clean vessel, and an amazing Crew. I'm looking forward to my next trip aboard the Pacific Quest
