ROSEBURG, Ore – Adults can learn duck hunting basics at a new workshop offered by ODFW in Myrtle Point and Coquille. Workshops are each two half-day sessions and offered Nov. 13-14 or Nov. 14-15. Registration deadline is Nov. 7.

Workshops include an afternoon of shotgun skills training with an introduction to duck hunting knowledge the first day, followed by an actual hunt at the Coquille Valley Wildlife Area the next morning with assigned hunting mentors. ODFW instructors will teach new duck hunters how to select the right gear, set decoys, understand duck behavior and identify various ducks, how to field dress harvested birds, and more. Participants gain the skills and knowledge to successfully hunt on their own in the future.

Because participants will be using shotguns (their own or one of ODFW’s), attendance at both days of their selected workshop is required. Attendees must purchase their hunting license, Migratory Bird HIP validation, resident waterfowl validation, and Federal Waterfowl Stamp prior to the workshop. Workshop fee is $70 and is over-18 only.

Nov. 13-14 Workshop:

Nov. 13, classroom: Myrtle Point Sportsman’s Club, 95414 Sitkum Ln, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m
Nov. 14, hunt: Coquille Valley Wildlife Area, 5:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Nov. 14-15 Workshop:

Nov. 15, hunt: Coquille Valley Wildlife Area, 5:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

ODFW provides shotguns, ammunition, waders, blinds, duck calls, and instruction. In mid-November, most ducks at the wildlife area will be dabbling ducks: Northern pintail, American widgeon, and green-winged teal.
