Lake Pardee Fish Report

4-3-2009
Fred Dorman

The weather here is ideal, cool mornings and evenings with lots of clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid 70's. The long range forecast calls for some wind and scattered clouds next week. Water temperatures warmed just a little this week to 57 degrees at surface and 50 degrees at the 20 foot mark. The water visibility is again clear to 20 feet with no debris visible. The water level has dropped about 4 feet since last report, Lake level is approximately 10 feet below spill and holding.

BANK FISHING ---- Shore anglers continue to do well. The planters continue to remain in the Recreation Area for extended periods much to the delight of all the bank anglers along the shore. The bite was been good all week due to recent plants by CFG and Pardee Lake Inc. The hot spots have been Tom Sawyer Island (particularly under the foot bridge), the Launch Ramp, Rainbow Point and the bank behind the EBMUD boathouse. Sliding sinker set ups are widely used, however silver/blue Kastmasters and black woolly buggers are also very successful right after a plant. White power eggs, maggots and power worms are the best sellers at the Marina, with night crawlers and yellow power bait also popular.

TROLLERS----Trollers are doing as well as the economy-not. Reports indicate tough times for the boat bound this week. Long hours working the coves and river arm upstream net the average boat three to four fish for all the their efforts. No reports of any chrome plated beauties caught last week, trout only. Hard to tell exactly what has shut down the bite, one Troller I spoke to mentioned that the fish he cleaned had nothing in their stomachs. This happens occasionally but usually turns around quickly; hope that's the case this weekend. I'm hearing that the majority of fish caught last week were landed using flashers tipped with a partial night crawler. Most are heading upstream but I did see a few working the Narrows and Mel's Cove. The Trout are still shallow; don't go too deep most hookups are at 5 to 15 feet. Some Trollers have been tying off and still fishing in the coves along the eastern shore and upstream until the trolling improves.

BASS- I don't get a lot of bass information to share since most bass fishermen that fish here at Pardee Lake by pass the Marina except to weigh and record large catches. This is a great bass fishery and I will always pass along any and all bass tidbits that I hear about.

RECENT SUCCESS STORIES---Mark Pico from the thriving metropolis of Valley Springs got this 1.5 lb perch at the wood pile using marshmallows and worms. First perch reported this season. Congratulation-great job! Remember to stop by the Marina and share your photos and tales and you too can call your relatives and tell them to Google you!

To date 40,000 lbs of good size Trout have been planted by Lake Pardee Inc. and the California Department of Fish and Game with more plants scheduled in the near future.
