Anglers May See Chinook Active Spawning Over The Next Few Weeks

9-16-2020
OR Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff

Water from upstream reservoirs is being released to augment flows below Foster. Currently it is at 1,700 cfs at Waterloo. Fishing is generally best when flows are below 3,000 cfs.

About 5,000 summer steelhead have crossed above Willamette Falls on their way to the upper basin and about 620 of these have made it to the fish ladder below Foster Dam.  Many more steelhead can be found upstream of Waterloo up to Foster dam. As a reminder, fishing for chinook is now closed until Oct. 15. Fishing for smallmouth bass can be very good below Lebanon.

Anglers may see Chinook salmon active spawning over the next few weeks.  Please keep your distance when observing this so as not to stress these fish during this very important time in their life.

The entire river is now open to trout fishing until Oct 31. As a reminder, only hatchery trout are allowed to be kept
