San Quintin Sportfishing Fish Report

We visited San Quint??n last March 20th and 21st , 2009.
Four boats were monitored when arriving at Old Mill launch ramp, from six possible fishing trips: Coyote (Friday), and Cucajuan, Marinero and Fanny I (Saturday) that hosted ten fishermen.
A total of 316 fishes were identified plus four jumbo squids and a bat ray. The most abundant fish species were 164 vermilion rockfish, 38 whitefish, 29 bocaccios, 17 lingcods, 14 brown rockfish, 11 flag rockfish, 11 starry rockfish, 8 greenspotted rockfish, and minors numbers of cowcod, sugar bass, olive rockfish, barred sand bass, sheephead, mackerels and a loneliness bonito. Temperature of surface water was 57^o F. A boat was fishing south at the 160 spot, and the others to the famous 240 spot. There were few boats as same in months ago, however as a fisherman said, "the lowest catch at San Quint??n is the best catch at California waters"
Friday and Saturday were good days to fishing, no rain, no strong winds, and good to relax and enjoy the quiet San Quint??n bay.
This San Quint??n trip was approached for a practical class of my Ecology of Coastal Fishes course that I teach at CICESE; I thank to Abigail Dominguez, Maria Fernanda Hernandez, and Cesar Guerrero for their valuable help in measuring and weighing the fishes, for the otoliths extraction to aging the vermilion rockfish, and the gonads extraction for the whitefish. We were hosted at Old Mill Hotel with Nancy and Jim, long time good friends, and as usual we enjoyed the trip dinning at Jardines Baja (Pismo clams covered with breadercrumbs, fillet of fish padding with cheese, and Jardines shrimps) all plates a delicious. After the monitoring on Friday, we visited La Lobera (km 47 south of San Quint??n), an interesting site formed by a big hole, like a ring, with an underground water entrance, and with many sealions resting on the inside beach. At Saturday morning, we visited the oyster culture at Bah??a Falsa. After the monitoring, Tiburon's pangas invited us a crusher meat of manta ray cooked as the sea turtle recipe. We return back to Ensenada to arrive at 18:30 hrs.
