Truckee River Fishing Report-8-11-19

8-11-2019
Matt Koles

Much cooler weather this week on the Truckee River.

Fishing was much improved thanks to the weather. Upper 30’s at night ain’t bad for mid-August. I’m usually so over the heat by this time, then you get home and the wife wants to take the kids to the lake. No. She’s talked me into it a few times this summer because it hasn’t been that hot.

Good fishing. Flows are up over 600 cfs here in the Hirsch, 500 at Mogul , and above 600 way out East. Really good for right now. Lake Tahoe is the fullest it’s been in 20 years. It will be good to have all that water this fall.

Most of the trouts are still in the pocket water. You have to get in there to get ‘em. Couple guys did not listen to my advice and borrow the wading staff last week. They were deer in headlights on the river.  Don’t feel your manhood is threatened, get over it and heed my advice.

So think lots of crayfish, mudbugs, crawfish, whatever you like to call them. A molting soft shell crayfish is too much for those fish to handle. These fish feed predominately on them on the Truckee River. When folks ask, how’s the dry fishing? Shitty, it’s mid-August and and these fish are feeding on molting crayfish. If you go out right before dark you’ll probably see some dinks rising. Better off to go out to the Little Truckee, be careful, you might hit 5 guides on your backcast.

We had a great Tight Line Nymph Clinic this weekend. I have one space available for this Saturday.
