Shogun Sportfishing Fish Report
9-25-2008
Bruce A. Smith
The Shogun has loaded some special equipment and have on board our loyal passengers, staff from Monterey Bay Aquarium Husbandry Division. Their goals are many on this 10 day trip, including collection of pelagic species that will be held for two years for grow out and reintroduction into the redesigned Outer Bay exhibit in June of 2010. The Shogun crew and aquarium staff working together hope to capture an Oceanic White Tip shark for exhibit. The last white tip collected on board the Shogun was on exhibit for 3 years and viewed by millions.
Colleagues from CIBNOR and CICIMAR in La Paz BCS are with us collecting squid samples and hope to sample and tag Dorado to support their respective research. As a crew member on the Shogun there are many diverse opportunities where we learn a lot from our passengers. Interesting tag data containing fish physiology and migration routes are explained to us fishermen in a way that makes us appreciate the dynamics of these pelagic species.
This evening we are running toward the Tanner Bank where there has been good sign of smaller Blue Fin. After dinner we drifted for an hour jigging squid for research samples and possibly a hook bait or two. The Shogun will be on the bank before first light.
