Chartermaster David Choate couldn't make the trip, but Bruce Smith skippered the Shogun anglers to a fine catch of big yellowfin, returning to Fisherman's Landing September 19.

"There's very good sign of big fish," said Smith at the scales, "with several good schools on black porpoise. There were very few yellowtail around."

"We on board the Shogun would like to thank our lucky star once again," read the report from the boat on September 17. "The fishing and the weather were outstanding again today. There was a responsive school of tuna early, and not 20 minutes later we found another cooperative spot. And so went the day. This afternoon we had a great stop again for dozens of beautiful yellowfin tuna. Many fish were above 70 pounds. As the sun set we said good bye to Guadalupe Island."

After the weigh-in, Chuck Robinson of Anaheim had the jackpot winner, a 94-pound tuna he said took a sardine on a 5/0 ringed gorilla hook. He used 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 80-pound Izorline Spectra on a Penn 16 S reel with a Tiburon conversion and a 6455 XH Calstar custom rod by Baja Dreamer for Fish For America.

Craig Stanton of Redondo Beach won second place for a 93.6-pounder, and Wes Pierson of Rancho Santa Margarita got third for a 92.6-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin.
