More Snow...
5-27-2019
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing Staff
More snow, more snow, sunny, more snow, more snow, more snow, sunny – then snow and more snow today. With the cold temps, we were down to 8 degrees with the wind chill thus the Lake is still empty up front – the run-off just can’t seem to get started.
Called SCE to get the official reason about why they took the Lake to empty – Samantha Nelson, Production Manager gave us this statement – “The predicted run-off this year is 160% of normal. This means we have to make room in the reservoir to accommodate the higher than average year water year. Our main priority is dam safety and to be prudent operators of the Bishop Creek Project. Bishop Mono Basin Operations can control flow to an extent. The control mechanism has limits. For this reason, we like to make sure our reservoirs are ready for the run-off season. Our water management plan takes into account the predicted run-off forecast for the season, the maximum reservoir storage capacity, and our obligation to our downstream water rights holders and users. Due to the cold front moving in this month (reducing snowmelt) and the items as mentioned earlier in our water management plan, Sabrina is at a low level.” So there you have it.
Fishing at Lake Sabrina involves a bit of a walk. You might want to try back behind what is normally the Island or if you’re into a bit of a hike, might try out by Cookie’s Point where the back Natural Lake spills into the front Natural Lake. Be careful if you get close to the water – there’s a lot of slick mud down there. If you’re not sure where that is come on in the building and we’ll show you!
Hikers:
With the continued snow, many of the trails are still covered in snow, but there are also some areas that the snow has melted making for a wet trail. Also, with all the new snow, Spring avalanches are a bit of a concern. Please check the weather report prior to heading into the backcountry for an overnighter or two. Might want to hike with a buddy. Put a note in your car about where you were headed and when you think you’ll return.
Until I get our cook trained, the Café will close on Wednesdays – need one day to do the shopping and get the laundry done! The Store will be open every day from 8:00am to 6:00pm till we get boats on the Lake – then we’ll go to Summer hours.
It will be a few weeks before Department of Fish and WildLife get down to the Lake to stock – stay tuned.
