A few days prior to this trip the weather report looked absolutely hideous.... Forecasted 20-25kts of wind and a sensitive bluefin bite was not adding up to much fun. We were prepared to go the distance and go wherever we needed to catch some fish and the group cooperated by showing up for an early departure.
Unfortunately after studying the weather forecasts we determined that not only would it be unfishable, it would realistically not be safe to go past 75 miles. Just when it looked dismal we got reports of some decent fishing on the local grounds. It just goes to show that you can't wait until they start biting you just need to go. We started drifting first thing in the morning and drifted all day. It was tough due to the choppy weather but hard work and perseverance payed off with a bluefin tuna bite.
We ended the day with 74 bluefin many in the 30-65lb class.

There were some epic battles but with the correct gear and a little luck - losses were kept to a minimum.
Pictured is one of the reasons everyone's gear was in top notch working condition and that is Ken Corwin from Ken's Custom Reels and his son Dakota with one of several fish that Dakota caught today.
Looking Forward To A Break From The Wind,

The Guys

We arrived on the bluefin grounds with high expectations and were looking forward to getting in on some of that steady fishing that's been going on. While in search mode & looking hard, the morning flew by when we realized that there was only 1 halfway decent stop for the entire fleet and got the feeling then that we got "bluefinned". With water conditions basically the same, there were less fish seen and what sign we saw, refused to bite...... Read More
