Bass Anglers Report a Good Bite on the Lake
1-28-2019
Glory Hole Sports Staff
New Melones Lake level is currently at 1039.50 and 48.50 ft. from full, rising 4.80 ft. in two weeks. Water clarity has been reported to be stained in the creek arms as well as on the main lake, visibility down to 15-20 ft. Current water temperature is 51-54 d. Tuttletown middle ramp is currently in use for lake elevations from 1036.00-942.00. Glory Hole Point side of the lake has the high ramp working and doesn't appear that the middle ramp will be in use this year. Angels Cove ramp also in use.
Anglers FYI: For anyone with a potential lake record please call us at the store and hopefully we can send someone to weigh, photograph and measure the catch at the lake. GHS is the unofficial recorder of lake records for New Melones, and we understand there is sometimes conflicting interest in the welfare of the catch, whether or not to release the potential record, sacrificing your place as a record holder for the lake.
We do promote catch and release. For potential lake records, record the statistics of the fish... length, girth, weight and photographed at the lake before releasing her. If indeed we can verify the information that is provided, such as a witness, comparing the scale used with ours, a photograph with the fish hanging from the scale and can see the scale weight, etc...then we can accept this as proof. If your catch has expired than indeed bring it in to GHS so we can record it here, and you can have it mounted!
TROUT
Winter trout bite on Melones has been a mix of good days and some slow days. Reports of Brown trout up river foraging on Speedy Shiners, and Macks black and white Hum Dinger.
George Rabdrn of Lodi, Ca. landed these two Rainbow trout trolling near Rose Island. George was Rolling shad and reported he was near the surface.
KOKANEE
Trout angler reported landing two 12" Kokanee after our last storms. Needlefish with a scent of Pro-Cure Kokanee/Trout are what they were caught with at 30' depth.
BASS
Bass anglers report a good bite on the lake landing 20-30 bass in a days outing. 2-3 lb Spotted Bass, and some really nice Largemouth up to 10lb.3 oz. Josh Fernandes of Copperopolis was on Melones 1-28 landing this nice 5 lb..7 oz. Large Mouth using a finesse rigged crawfish/pumpkin with Crawfish scent in 10 ft. of water. PB for Josh, thanks for sharing!
CATFISH
No reports of any catfish being caught.
CRAPPIE
Sporadic nice size slabs 2-2.5 lb have been caught by anglers trolling for trout at 20 ft. using Apex Lures and spoons. Bass anglers are also getting their soft plastic baits inhaled by Crappie, also in the suspended shad balls
