Fish Report for 11-15-2018

The Fishing Season has Come to a Close

11-15-2018
Doug Busey

Hello Fellow anglers,  As of November 15th, the fishing season has come to a close for many areas. Inyo and Mono County lakes and rivers and most rivers in California. Check your regulations as some rivers will convert to catch and release with artificial lures or flies for the winter season. Lakes in Alpine county remain open to fishing all year long. As of the 13th, the roads into the back lakes were still open. I feel with a hint of weather coming our way next week. They too will close for the season. We are just a couple moths away from ice fishing and the Topaz Lake opening day on the 1st of January. This will give us a brief time to re spool and lube up our reels. I personally do not like the shorter daylight hours, but we can look forward to December 21st. This will be the the peak of the winter solstice, and we gain one minute of daylight each day forward from there.

SILVER LAKE: The water level is down approx 30 feet off the top of the ramp. There is a small canal leading to the main lake. Small carry boats or kayaks are recommended only. Use caution if you do decide to venture out. there are many obstacles ( rocks) all over the lake. Mackinaw and brown action is good to fair this time of year.

CAPLES LAKE: The resort has closed for the season and will open next spring. The E.I.D. day use facilities are now closed. Shore fishing from the dam or spillway area can be very productive. The water level is down approx 15 feet. A walk to the Woods Creek area can reward you with nice rainbows or brown trout. The fishing has been spotty recently, or as some would say, on and off.

RED LAKE: the water level is down 10 feet or so. The fishing has picked up for small rainbows for anglers using salmon eggs or throwing Kastmaster lures.

EAST AND WEST FORK CARSON RIVER CALIFORNIA SIDE: Closed to fishing as of November 15th. Will reopen the last Saturday in April. From Hangmans bridge downstream to the Nevada state line is open to catch and release with artificial lures or flies only with a barbless hook.
SILVER CREEK, MARKLEEVILLE CREEK, WOLF CREEK: close to fishing as of November 15th.
TROUT CREEK, UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER, TAYLOR CREEK: All streams leading into lake Tahoe are closed to fishing until July 1, 2019.

HEENAN RESERVOIR: Closed to fishing.

BLUE LAKES: As of the 13th of November, the road was still open. This can change on a daily basis this time of year.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: The campground is closed. But the lake is open all year to fishing. This is the beginning of the best time of year to fish this lake. Last reports were a couple anglers fishing off the ramp with Powerbait. They caught a 4 and a 5 lb rainbow with a couple in the 12 to 14 inch class. Both roads are open, but a reminder that the paved road off of highway 89 will close as we get into the winter months.

TOPAZ LAKE: Fishing opens on the 1st of January. I have been in contact with the Topaz Lodge in regards t the 2019 fishing derby. I will have that information in a future report as soon as I get the information. The lake level has started to rise a little  and should continue up to opening day.

CARSON RIVER NEVADA SIDE:  Is open to fishing all year long. Best areas are up by the broken dam out of Gardnerville or through the Deer Run Rd area in Carson City

WALKER RIVER WEST FORK: The NDOW has planted the Wilson Canyon area last week with nice catchable rainbow trout. They are a strain of diploid trout.
Good luck on your next fishing adventure. I hope to see you on the water. If you have a question in our local fishing area, or have a fishing report, call the Naw line at 775-267-9722.
