Best bets for weekend fishing

  • Several Willamette Valley ponds have been regularly stocked with trout – including some big ones – in recent weeks and should offer fair to good fishing for hardy anglers willing to brave the winter weather.
  • Conditions look good for winter steelhead fishing on some north coast rivers, including Alsea, lower Columbia tributaries, Neccanicum, N Fork Nehalem, Nestucca/Three Rivers, Trask and Wilson. It will be a while before runs hit their peak, but there are early fish to be caught.
  • Other reports of winter steelhead being caught are coming in from the middle Rogue, Hood, Umpqua, John Day, Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers.
  • Ice fishing is underway at locations in eastern Oregon, including Dog Lake, Pilcher and Wolf Creek reservoirs and Kinney Lake.
  • Several rivers throughout the state offer good winter fishing for trout, including the Crooked, lower Deschutes, Metolius, Blitzen, Chewaucan and Wallowa.

Buying your 2019 fishing and hunting licenses
ODFW’s new licensing system allows you to carry your licenses and tags on your smartphone. (Though you can still print them to paper at home or at a license vendor.) The first step is to go to the MyODFW licensing page to locate and verify your account. Next you’ll want to download the MyODFW app, which will store your documents even when you’re out of cell phone range. Be sure you verify your account at MyODFW.com BEFORE your try to log into the MyODFW app.

Check out the How to buy a license or tag page, and the frequently asked questions if you have additional questions.
