Very Consistent Bite!

5-15-2018
Tom Loe

The bite here has been very consistent on most days. No need to start super early here, as the midges don’t start coming off until after 8am on most days. Fish #16-18 blood midges, #18 zebras, and #16-18 copper and dark tiger midges in the early hours close to the bottom. You can raise your flies 2-3′ off the bottom later in the morning and afternoon and try #18-20 gillies to stay on the fish. The Sacramento Perch have been a problem on some days, but learning to distinguish their takes from a trout’s can help avoid them. The perch will cause your indicator to slightly dip or dance near the surface, while a trout will pull it under. Resist setting the hook on the perch and more times than not they will spit the fly themselves. 13-15′ feet has been a good depth to target in McGee Bay over a clean mud bottom. Sandy Point and Six Bays have also been giving up some fish under the right wind conditions.
