Its rainbow trout that is on the menu for now here along the Colorado River. We are having a great season of trout fishing here below Davis Dam. Our anglers local and visiting are having great success up and down the river. Visiting from North Dakota 8 year old Ethan Harbin was fishing in the rotary park area and is seen here holding 3 nice rainbows. It was power bait that brought them to the table, also fishing from shore in the community park area our local anglers Mike Merritt and Jim Rott showing off their limit of trout. A reminder the limit of trout has changed to 5 below Davis dam. The anglers fishing from shore were using the Berkley crappie jigs. The best part of these trout is they are doing a super job of attacking the caddis fly at their earliest stages. I have been collecting samples for our pest abatement dept. I was told that not just the caddis fly but the midge and black fly are in the contents along with some of the various mussels we have. These examples of what the trout are feeding on here along the Colorado river is sure to keep our rainbow trout stocking program on track. I say a super thanks to the folks up at willow beach hatchery for doing such a great job. Not only raising but getting them to us especially in our time of need. The federal willow beach hatchery is just about through for the stocking season. We will how ever be getting some trout stocked but not of this quality. the rainbow trout that will be stocked in various places will be a smaller size and meant for insect control. But not to worry our striper bite should be picking up. The stripers are just not here as of yet a couple here but no schools its just hit or miss as of yet. I am thinking it is due to our turbulent weather with these various cold fronts coming in. Lake Mohave is the same no striper action to speak of. The large mouth bass are in pre spawn or watching the nest. This is your catch and release time. With our the bass watching the nest which they will protect and their young fry ( baby fish) the carp will eat the eggs and wipe out that batch. Please let them go in the same area. Also use a barbless hook or maybe smash the barb for all catch and release a very big thanks you. Hope this helps for now and thanks for bringing in the fish for not just a share but for our research of what they are eating. The trout like power bait night crawlers and various spinners besides what they are finding along our river bottom. hope to see you soon.
