Chico Area Flyfishers
6-12-2008
The Chico Area Flyfishers held their fishout last month at McCumber Lake. The group released over 100 fish in three days, including rainbows and browns up to 20 inches long. Val Bowlby caught the largest rainbow on a small dry fly, and Don Sleeper caught the largest brown on a small black midge. Also productive were wiggle tail and Adams patterns fished on a floating line.
The CAF's "Lightning Bugs" youth group had its own fishout at Coffee Cup Lake near Rolling Hills Casino in Corning. Plenty of large bass and trout were caught, including fish up to 10 pounds. The trick was to slow troll from a pontoon boat or float tube using intermediate or floating lines. Best fly patterns were TS Buggers, wiggle tails, BH Wooly Buggers in black or olive, and bass poppers.
Other CAF member successes included Don Sleeper heading to Pyramid Lake and releasing 20 of that water's beautiful cutthroat trout from four to nine pounds each, using red Copper Johns and black wiggle tails. Club president Lincoln Gray headed up to Deer Creek with his fishing partner and the pair released over 50 trout.
