Far from the results that we were looking for; light years away truth be told. No shortage of fish, everywhere we drove through, looked at, and tried produced a sign, but conditions were a real battle. Sloppy weather and a crap sea state, exacerbated by current running straight into it, added to the lack of fun. This was definitely one of those times when the battle was one sided; we were the uncontested loser in a one legged ass kicking contest. Fishing at it's finest of course; nothing new here. There are those times when every step a Captain takes leads in the right direction. And then there are the mathematically guaranteed opposite. We definitely started off on the right foot this run. Now we have a stellar view from the other side. Being no stranger to both positions this episode is recognized in proper perspective. And, if nothing else, such results tend to temper doubt about the next necessary manuever. Out of sync or otherwise there are times when one simply must go. This is one of them. Not before one last Hail Mary though. We'll toss it up, hold our breath, then jump on the first coach out of dodge if necessary. Photo today features the one and only “Rock Cod Rick” Maxa, Co-Host of the number one fishing radio talk show in the west, Let's Talk Hookup. I've extended endless accolades for Ricky over the years and won't stop now. He is worthy of every compliment and then some. Also now Co-Owner of Fisherman's Landing Tackle Ricky is among a very small fraternity of tackle experts and genuine fishing master's who reperesent this fishery in warm, welcoming color. The is no pretention or haughtiness in the man. And his sense of humor always lightens the atmoshpere. An individual who has done so much that I almost said “who has done it all”, Rick shares every ounce of knowledge that he has gained with enthusiasm and sincerity. There is no better ambassador in Southern California style fishing. Rick is all smiles in the photo with his 170 pound class yellowfin after a battle that ended comically amidst many friends. The treacherous conditions made for some memorable “weaves” today; this was one of them.

A quick look is all it took to evaluate the whole picture. Nothing changed. To reiterate the litany of terrible conditions or lament about them was pointless; especially taking into account that we we're gone. Another time for that place there will be, perhaps even tomorrow. We well know that any one of these places can turn on a dime. That knowledge is the elixir of optimism; a fuel that many a triumph in the face of doom can be...... Read More
