Convict Lake Fishing Report
6-25-2016
Convict Lake Staff
It's been about 3 weeks since any trophy trout have been planted at Convict. Mono County was scheduled to stock trophy trout today but due to the Mono Lake fire it was pushed back until tomorrow. So over the next two weeks I expect a lot of quality fish to be caught. There will be no fishing report next week, but I'll catch everyone up on July 9th. I hope everyone has a great 4th.
Also our spring derby has been completed and I'm working on getting the results out early this week. Winners will be emailed or receive a letter sent with their prize. I'll be posting the winners on the derby page on the website and I'll be sending out an email.
Catch of the Week: Amy Tenchavez with a beauty from the South Shore. It was a 2 pound 13 ounce Rainbow caught with a Pink Night Crawler. Nice catch, Amy!
Other notable catches this week:
Aiden Lira from Mirada , CA with a fat 2 pound 12 ounce Rainbow. He was fishing the South Shore using garlic nightcrawlers.
Jackie Bentley of Austin, TX hooked into a 2 pound 4 ounce Rainbow using Power Worms. She was fishing near Hangman's Tree.
Ron and Robert Beil from Bellfower, CA with a hefty stringer. They were fishing the North Shore using Cheese Powerbait.
Tactics/Bait: Mice Tails and Gulp worms were the hot jigs. Pink seem to be the most productive color. I didn't get much feedback on lures this week. Besides Powerbait, both nightcrawlers and Pinched Crawlers were the hot baits. The top Powerbait color was Cheese. In the creek try salmon eggs, small spinners or Marvel Flies. The hot location this week was the South Shore. Alternative locations to try would be the Inlet, North Shore, Jetty/Outlet Area and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive: Panther Martins, Tasmanian Devils, green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Kastmasters, NeedleFish, Roostertails, and garlic scent on Powerbait.
Here is a list of recommended flies:
Dry Flies: Adams, Female Adams, Cutter's Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Black/Red Ants, Sierra Bright Dot, Royal Coachman and Hoppers.
Streamers: Wooly Bugger (black, brown, olive, or green), Mutuka (black, brown, olive, or green), Hornberg, and Muddler Minnows.
Wet Flies(Nymphs): Prince Nymph, Flashback Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Zebra Midge (red and black), Copper John (red and copper) and San Juan Worm (brown or red).
Other Resources: View our Convict Lake Fishing Map and Fishing Rig Suggestion brochures. Both brochures are available in the General Store.
Derby News: The Ambush at the Lake fall fishing derby will be starting on September 5th and running until the end of the 2016 fishing season. Don't miss out on the chance to win $6,000 in Resort prizes! The Morrison Bonus will be on the weekend of October 28-30. $2,200 in cash prizes.
Weather: The forecast has mostly sunny skies at the start of next week and warm throughout. The high temps starting Monday will be in the lows-80s and the lows will be in the mid-50s. Here is the National Weather Service link that is usually quite accurate: 7-Day Forecast Convict Lake.
Sunrise - Sunset: Sunrise this week 5:36am - 5:38am and Sunset 8:21pm - 8:21pm.
Stocking: Mono County was scheduled to stock trophy trout today but due to the Mono Lake fire it was pushed back until tomorrow. The DFW is scheduled to plant both the lake and creek the week of June 26th.
