First Seabass

We had high hopes that fishing luck would favor our first move but it didn't. A couple of bonus seabass were the highlight, and there were plenty of unwanted, miniature yellowtail, but the right sign of bigger yellows was limited to a handful or two crashing around that would not get with the program. Zero conditions was the likely culprit; no current at all, slack, stagnant. On the positive side flat calm seas made for a beautiful time of it. Impressive scenery, warm temperatures, and lake like surface conditions welcomed anglers to the rail. And while the catching was off all were in good spirits buoyed by the knowledge that this was a bonus afternoon on which we were not gambling the success of this entire voyage. As I mentioned to a couple of anglers taking a break in the galley at one point, “It's a marathon, not a sprint”. With this foremost in mind we settled in for the night looking to break up the ride and allow time for some grumpy weather down below to improve before venturing on. Today's photo features chosen angler Rey Yturralde who began his fishing time on the right note landing this 25 pound class White Sea Bass. An aside worth noting is the classic gear used to land this fine prize. Take a look at that rod and reel combo. Consistent with seabass lore Rey was the perfect candidate for this “lucky” haul.

A few for the skiff guys, and a few on the long rods for the lucky handful are epic on the local scene; an absolute gift to be cherished and savored, but we have a yearning for a style of fishing with more substantive opportunity. Those big...... Read More
