"Another great day of fishing," wrote Searcher skipper Art Taylor on November 7, "on the 13 fathom bank! We got yellowfin tuna up to 30 pounds and yellowtail 12 to 15 pounds. At any time during the morning you could cast out a fresh sardine and hook a yellowfin tuna and just about every time you went to the bottom with a sardine, it produced a yellowtail--great fishing.
?Į"We trolled for a long time after lunch to try to get everyone a wahoo and only came up with one wahoo. The good thing is Ryan D'Amato from San Juan Capistrano caught his first wahoo ever so he is really happy. He came on this trip with hopes of catching a wahoo and so he accomplished that. Good job, Ryan!
"The weather is still calm and we are enjoying that a lot. We left the 13 fathom bank for the south end of Cedros Island with hopes of duplicating the fishing we had last trip there."
Wahoo swept the jackpots when Art weighed the fish at Fisherman's Landing November 11. His seven-day trip with 17 anglers paid off with a varied catch.
Alan Gerardi of Grants Pass, OR won the jackpot with a 59.6-pound wahoo. He hooked it on a chrome Raider jig, 50-pound blue Izorline, and Avet LX reel and a Calstar 850 M rod. He said it was his best wahoo ever.
Mitch Margaretich of Dana Point won second place for a 55.2-pound skinny, and Rob Simpson of Placentia was third, for a 54.8-pound wahoo.
"It's my first one," he said, "and it's my first trip."
