Let's Go Fishing

DELTA
Striped bass fishing continues to be a hit and miss these days due to the cold and murky water conditions. The better water clarity is on the San Joaquin River where bait dunkers at anchor are spending time in Potato Slough near Grindstone Joe’s tossing shad or sardines. Expect a good number of dinks and a few going up to 24” in length. On the Sacramento River the fishing is tough due to high roily water. Better bet is anchor and fish for sturgeon where conditions are perfect. Best baits continue to be eel strips tipped with nightcrawler and salmon roe. As the water warms up and clarity improves the striped bass fishing should jump off the charts. Stay tuned for periodic updates.

CLEAR LAKE
The recent Western Outdoor News Bass Tournament produced an amazing 19 largemouth bass weighing more than 8 pounds. The winning weight for the three-day event topped 80 pounds for 15 fish.

SAN PABLO BAY
Halibut fishing continues to get better, especially for trollers bouncing the bottom with anchovies. Good numbers of juvenile stripers are stealing your bait. The sturgeon fishing is getting much better off China Camp, the Pump House and the mouth of the Petaluma River. The best bait is shrimp baits.

OCEAN
Last week was the opening of rock cod fishing south of Pigeon Point and salmon fishing south of Horse Mountain along with the opening of commercial crab pot pulling season. Charter boats are planning combination rock fish-crab trips out of Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and Monterey and salmon crab trips out of Bodega Bay.

HOGAN RESERVOIR
Plenty of water in which to launch your boat. Striped bass are active and willing to strike live minnows or cut bait. The impoundment has now surpassed 40% capacity.

Take time to enjoy the great outdoors. Until next tide stay safe.
