Thankfully a day of travel that passed in relatively quick fashion; one day uphill in the trough is plenty; more than that is drudgery; a lot more than that is downright treacherous. Not that it was a bad ride, standard is how I would call it, but I doubt any of the sixteen anglers disembarking tomorrow will miss it, or harbor pangs of remorse about missing another three days in the soup traveling north. The beauty of the fly down/fly back in living color; if the ride is agreeable with one's temperament it's an available option; if the express trip home is more suitable one can do that too. Reflecting upon the results of this adventure, that was drawn out by fishing that never really changed from one at a time, the focus must be on our collective success. Though they never committed to an all out charge both the tuna and wahoo added up to more than a little something in the end. We have a trip in the RSW tanks certain to fill tables and freezers at home of many families and friends. The real deficit I bemoan is the lack of opportunity at big fish; the signature of these voyages that consistently sets them apart from any other fishing destination in the world. This run the jumbos – yellowfin tuna over 200 pounds, were simply not in the shallows preferring to cruise haunts somewhere else in the seemingly infinite abyss. Fishing of course is exactly that; it does not come anywhere with guarantees of success; and that is a big part of the attraction. The less than stellar runs provide contrast, and incentive to join the fray again and make good on better times. I don't want to get too far down in casting this run in the category of doom. We came, we saw, much fun was had, and we lived to tell about it; that's a success in any book. We just missed the gold ring on a lot of revolutions. Next time. Final voyage photos feature Royal Star veteran's Yacoob Vaheed reefing on a good one in the corner, and Rob Duby inserting a little levity into the moment while Captain Brian Sims hoists his 130 pounder.
