To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

The trout bite seems to be migrating west into deeper waters due to warming water temperatures. The largest trout of the past week belonged to Earl Callander of Oceanside and weighed 11.65#s it was caught on a nightcrawler west of Senior Shoreline. The top baits have been kastmasters, mousetails, and inflated nightcrawlers.

The bass bite has been strong. Wendell Jackson of Escondido caught and released an 8.15# bass Saturday which he caught at the South Shore Rock Pile while fishing for crappie. Richard Fridell caught and released a 7.70# bass in the same area using a brush hog six days earlier.

Crappie are being caught in increasing numbers. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners. They bite best in the pre-dawn hours.

The catfish bite continues to thrive at the west end. Lake Wohlford catfish bite best on cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit.
