To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Wednesday’s trout plant kicked the bite into overdrive and the last couple of days have seen the best fishing so far this season. Early morning limits have been reported in Boat Dock Cove and West of Senior Shoreline. Results in Willow Cove and Oakvale Cove have been more sporadic. The top baits are salmon eggs, inflated nightcrawlers, or powerbait dipped in garlic sauce.

Largemouth Bass can be found around structure and hit on crawdads, swimbaits, or dark colored plastics.

The second big crappie to be weighed in this week was caught by Deanna French of Temecula on a Rapalla lure and weighed 2.05#s. Crappie prefer cover in which to hide and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners under the cover of darkness or overcast skies.

Catfish have been biting on the westernmost point of the northern shore. The largest of the past week belonged to Scott Keophantiroth and weighed 11.10#s. It was caught using cut mackerel. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
