Another very good go at them here today; big ones; only a few under 100#'s with six over the deuce (284, 259, 254, 210, 204, 202), and 160 – 190's aplenty. Keeping in mind that when I offer the description “aplenty” in these zones I refer to big fish standards. It's a different ball game - instead of a bunch of singles accumulating down here the hits are more equivalent to doubles, triples, and home runs. It doesn't take a lot of those to come out ahead overall.
Of course with this kind of fishing comes the inevitable few anglers that struggle through the cold cycle of angling when those bites just don't seem to come. Doing everything correctly, line in the water, tackle prepared perfectly – some times it just seems that the fish gods are against us; we all go through it. Other than ride it out, stay at the rail, and keep one's head up there is nothing else to do. One fish in this arena is all it takes. And that one, typically followed by several others when the spell finally does break, is almost always rewarded to those deserving souls who endure the mind taxing chore of overcoming the dreaded “snake bite”.
So now we do what we do. This is the time that we shine; the culmination of preparation, experience, and dedication. This is what we live for, and why recreational angler's recognize this fishery the world around. A couple of angler's today lived the dream. Rewarded with a 284 and 254 long time Royal Star angler's Tony Vultaggio and Len Cunningham are the perfect example of those among the fortunate few. They have logged their time at the rail, countless hours over the years, and earned these beautiful trophies through grit with honor.
