To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Trout season has finally arrived. The initial plant went off without a hitch and a huge crowd showed up for opening day. Early fishing results seem to favor the southern side of the lake. Look for the details on opening week of trout season in next week’s report. When fishing for trout remember to keep your leader short (12” or less) and light, no heavier than 4 pound test. The best results come from inflated nightcrawlers, powerbait (greens, yellows, rainbows), or salmon eggs.

The bass bite has been picking up and with the introduction of trout this is an ideal time to be throwing swimbaits out there in hopes of landing a lunker bass. Hayden Heck of Valley Center caught and released a 6.35# bass Saturday on a swimbait near Lusardi Point. Largemouth bass can be found around structure and are hitting on crawdads, crank bait, or dark colored plastics.

Remaining true to form the giant blue cats are biting this fall and for those in the know it’s easy pickings. Peter Vitkus of Valley Center weighed in a 32# whisker fish on Sunday his second to exceed 30#s in just two weeks. Mr. Vitkus was using cut mackerel in Willow Cove. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit.
