Big day

Very good fishing today – lines out all day long, fish coming over the rail, and beautiful weather and conditions to compliment the action. Five over the coveted “deuce” were among the mix with plenty of others in the low to high one hundreds. Throw in abundant “nuisance” 60 – 90 pounders and the catching tale of the day is complete. This is exactly what we came for. And, undeniably, timing is everything; thus far we are on the up side of the cycle. A detail I can offer following the prior two days of fishing is again what I/we preach without qualm. Since the advent of short top shots, fluorocarbon, and that style of rigging in various forms the opportunity for giant yellowfin tuna anglers to target these behemoths with sardines and 130 pound leader, rather than the old school 100 pound, leads to many more stories of success than defeat. More than once in awhile, unfortunately, anglers do not take heed of our regular admonitions about going lighter that 130 in these precincts, and suffer the entirely predictable result. Let me paint the scenario: mid day, haven't hooked a fish in hours, a few are crashing around on the outside; the perfect time and reason to drop down to my 100# outfit because I can't get a bite on the 130# right? Not surprisingly, especially in the case of angler's novice to this fishery, that seems to be conventional wisdom; and leads to the ill fated decision to drop down and chance it. What happens next, courtesy of Mr. Murphy, cosmic irony, or whatever one choses to assign the inevitable to, is that a bona fide giant happens along a slurps down that beaming target. I know a lot of giants have been landed using 100# test, I've been party to many. What I offer from plenty of experience is an accurate representation of percentages; anecdotal of course but reader's will decide to trust me or not.. When using 100# test the odds of success are less than half of what they are when anglers use 130. And from what I observe the anglers that stick with the 130 get just as many bites – there is no perceptible advantage to dropping down to 100 # or less in this region; one stays in the water with the big gear and their time, their chance, will come. Taking into account the amount of preparation that goes into these adventures I gather that everyone seeks to deliver on the big moment when it arrives. In the present I have seen both sides of the above described scenarios. All I can do is provide the information and hope that anglers will believe and apply. Lavishing in the success we are presently living we'll stick with the program and see what tomorrow brings.Photo today features Joe Mc Clean and his 218 landed during hot and heavy action just after dawn.
