Change of Pace

8/5/15 Timing and vigilance combined for a welcome change of pace today. The grumpy outside weather finally abated opening the door for an offshore venture following another heavenly night spent at anchor. An abundance of quality yellowtail in the hatch provided a perfect foundation for a prospecting mission that produced a few hours of action on school grade yellowfin tuna. Nothing large was in the mix – most fish were in the 10 – 15 pound class with a few standouts above and washouts below – but the quick hit style surface fishing got the blood flowing to be sure. Gaining altitude all afternoon we were grateful to be sliding through a historically difficult stretch of ocean relatively unscathed. Sights are set on something, anything in the way of larger class tuna to the north. Tomorrow will host another offshore mission crossing water that has avoided scrutiny for quite some time; just how I prefer. The thrill of hunt is always better heading into the unknown. Photo today is a grab from two days prior when Rob Doyle snarred this “tanker”, 59 pound bonus white sea bass while fishing for yellowtail along the coast. Nice.
