Fish Report for 5-9-2015
1st Pacific Halibut of the Year!
5-9-2015
Marc Schmidt
We finally had a decent weather day since it opened over a week ago out of Humboldt Bay and we took advantage of it to get to the halibut grounds. We had a combo trip today for halibut and salmon and we started with halibut. We had 2 halibut bites but only one stuck in the half day of fishin for them, it was a nice fat 31 lber to get us on the board for the 2015 halibut season. Salmon belly in 48 fathoms a bit north of town was the spot. We switched over to salmon at noon and put in an 8 lber right off the bat in 38 fathoms, we trolled some great looking rips with birds and bait and only had one other bite that stuck well but came off as soon as it surfaced. Bait and hoochies got the salmon bites. The salmon bite is picking up and I think if we give it a full day for salmon or halibut we could be getting some nice scores. We only have till the 15th of each month to catch the pacific halibut this year, until sept then daily through oct unless the quota is met. Weds the 13th just opened up on the schedule if you want to come out and give the halibut fishing a go. The current forecast shows it going real flat. Rockfishing opens the 15th, so that will be an option for us also. Call me to book a trip!
