June Lake Loop Opener Report

4-28-2015

Mother Nature came out fighting in full force for this year’s 2015 Sierra Opener. The June lake Loop experienced blizzard force winds and driving snow made it difficult for even the most seasoned fishermen to be able to cast at the starting time of 5:25am. The second largest amount of Rainbows caught in the Loop came out of June Lake. With averages ranging from 4lbs to the largest 6lbs 10oz caught by Steve Welch of Murrieta, Ca. Night Crawlers seemed to be the working bait of choice with Rapala lures and Berkley Mice Tails close behind.

Gull Lake holds this year’s record for the most and the largest Rainbows caught on Opener. Berkley Power Bait seemed to be the bait of choice for most of those “die hard” fisherman who refused to let a little thing like a small blizzard stop them from casting their lines into the water. The average Rainbow came in around 3.5 lbs and the largest weighing in at impressive 7.12lbs caught by JD Brosman from Alamo, Ca.
Silver Lake undoubtedly had the largest variety of Rainbows, Browns and Cut Throats caught. The bait of choice also seemed to be the Night Crawler and Berkley Power Bait being the second choice for those fishermen who are bound to be talking about this year’s opener for many years to come.

Rush Creek seemed to be a bit on the slow side with a few nice Cut Throats and Rainbows being pulled out with that “oldie but goodie” Rooster tail. Once the weather starts to warm up and the “hatch” begins this area is bound to pick up. Grant Lake was literally a “blow out” with only a few fish being caught from shore the largest being 3.5 lb Cut Throat. This Lake may be on the “low side” as far as water levels are concerned, but don’t let that fool you, some of the biggest fish in the Loop are hiding in Grant Lake.
