The final day of travel encompassed a whole lot of little; not much going on other than breaking down and cleaning up. A nice scenic run up the coast yielded fine weather though. Contrary to the offshore forecast and expectations we missed out on any kind of butt kicking; always a bonus but particularly poignant this voyage with it's near perfect weather record. It would be a shame to upset such a fine theme, so we didn't. Occurring hand in hand with the overall direction this voyage took it was just another manifestation of good fishing fortune.

This group of anglers, that have such a long history of fishing, and fishing together, has a way of making the most of any and every opportunity. They have earned their good fortune in time. As for this run it would be very difficult to draft a better plan that produces a better outcome. The big three again were achieved - quality, variety, and very sufficient quantity; a success, and all it represented, that was shared by everyone on board. Casting luck aside the results on this run were not by accident. Preparation, cooperation, and the equipment and drive to produce results beyond ordinary - or anything less, all of the above are responsible for many a successful outcome offshore fishing. Following this voyage my gratitude to this group of anglers is definitely in order. For they are the reason that we have the opportunity to follow our passion and create such enduring memories.

Captain Brian Sims now takes the helm as some forced time off the boat for yours truly grounds me through Thanksgiving. The good side of this cycle is family time for me of course, irreplaceable and cherished. Also I will be joining Southern California's Sport Fishing voices Pete Gray and Rick Maxa Sunday morning on Let's Talk Hookup. One of my favorite things to do when it comes to sharing my passion for fishing I look forward to hearing from anglers and providing perspective fresh from the grounds.

Final voyage photo features Royal Star veteran and jackpot winner Bob Wax who coaxed this crafty eighty six pound yellowfin into a bite using a sardine on the big gear.

11/13/14 One classic irony to share from an otherwise uneventful day. Beginning far offshore in search of the now wildly elusive dorado all signs pointed to a dreary slog after five or six fruitless morning hours. We definitely weren't feeling any love, and out here gut instinct is a virtue that I live by. Seizing upon the carefully considered bailout option, we aborted the outside mission heading inshore seeking a relaxing late afternoon of stopped boat fishing. We arrived at one...... Read More

11/12/14 To the north leaving big fish glory behind. A combination of factors, not the least of which was the very limited number of bites for a full afternoon of hard effort, called for a change of pace. Every voyage has it's distinct technical qualities. On this occasion catching and altitude took precedence; a little bit of breeze in the forecast and a little room left in our Mexican limits were persuasive motivators. A lot of fishing later the goal was achieved....... Read More
