We started off on the right track; a nice morning hit on 30 - 40 pound yellowfin with one fat albacore set what appeared to be the correct tone early, then we cratered. A long, mid morning lull of waiting while mapping out the promising afternoon zones resulted in proper placement when the fish did indeed show, but nothing other that a lot of drifting with tons of not biting fish around us became of it. Frustrating in every sense we recognized that our good morning fortune was far better than we accounted for at the time, and that now things can only improve; and improve they will.

Bumpy weather that did nothing to help our cause today appears to be on the way out as the remnant Hurrican Norbert chugs up the coast flattening out the seas up here in the process. Light breezes, rapidly subsiding seas, and a full moon coming are a combination tradionally favorable on the offshore grounds. Of course we're not banking it yet, too many times the perfect case has proven too perfect when it comes to fishing offshore, but the main component of success - a lot of fish around - is still one hundred percent in our favor. Wow did we see a bunch of both yellowfin and bluefin tuna around today; incredible signs.

And just to throw it out there that wasn't te only albacore we saw either. At least a few more handfuls of his cohorts were cruising around beneath us during our first hit of the morning. Very distinct on the fathometer they, like the rest of their buddies during the past couple of days, preferred to rubberneck and kick tires rather than get in the game. But they will eventually. I'm not saying that we are going to clobber big numbers of long fin out here yet, but the one we landed yesterday will not be the last.

Photo today features young Connor Chilson who at the age of nine is making his first long range voyage. He got right into the game today with his first yellowfin tuna, a fine, thirty pound class model.

9/7/14 Mucho fish so the reports from the outside go; getting them to bite is another story. Lock jaw is the theme we hear of upon departure. But our strategy, set in motion by the unwelcoming Hurricane Norbert steaming up the line, is presently one from which we can not deviate. To the west, offshore we go destined to make the most of whatever opportunities we find. No shortage of fish, in fact the exact opposite, gives reason for us to...... Read More
