The exact pace yellowtail fishing we were looking for; one to five hooked with the occasional flurry for more added up to an
ideal morning. Fishing age old areas amazing for their consistency of production over the past fifty, perhaps more like
seventy, years it was another of those classic ambles down the good side of memory lane.
When the action on yellowtail slowed to an occasional one or two the call for variety sounded. In the idyllic setting a late
afternoon round of kelp line yellowtail and excellent 3 -5 pound Calico bass fishing occupied the time how we prefer; amazing
what a little looking will produce.
A perfect interlude from the offshore bluefin action still going on above, another day of easy yellowtail fishing in
beautiful conditions would set us right before returning to the hallowed grounds. Not taking anything for granted,
recognizing that very few days out here are a simple extension of the prior, we head into tomorrow prepared to scrap for our
share. Doing so in this beautiful weather alone is a real pleasure.
Photos today feature veteran anglers Brian Geyer with a fine morning yellowtail and Captain Paul Caramao doing the lifting
honors, and yours truly with new Royal Star angler Ebert Fike, who was on fire this morning landing a daily limit of these
beauties in very short order.

8/9/13 Snap your fingers and just like that the whole ocean changes; the whole picture so rosy and burgeoning with potential becomes clouded and impossible to crack; the confidence so assured a week past is now weak at best - such is the beauty of fishing. This is rapidly unfolding as a mystery that suggests anything and everything can happen. Predicting or waxing prophetic about tomorrow, next week, or next month now has an onerous possibility of opposite consequence. What I...... Read More
