Back Bay Science Center educators will take visitors on a free tour of historic Shellmaker Island on Saturday, Aug. 19. The tour will begin promptly at 9 a.m. at 600 Shellmaker Road in Newport Beach.

The island is an historic landmark filled with human history. Recently discovered on the adjacent bluffs was the site of an ancient village which contained the largest known Indian burial ground in the Western United States. Shellmaker Island is an integral part of a 752-acre wildlife reserve known as Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. The tour will allow participants to see the past, present and future working together. View the Osprey chicks learning to fly with mom and dad close by, touch a shark or view a stingray and learn about the vital role of life in the bay environment.
