Sweet Fishing South

Bill Roecker

Roy Rose docked Royal Polaris October 29 after a ten-day open trip to Alijos Rocks, the southern banks and an offshore kelp area that has been producing wahoo and dorado under the paddies. Rose tied up at Fisherman's Landing, his 27 anglers got off and he weighed the best of the catch.

"We had beautiful weather," said Roy, "I mean great weather, and we got 38 bigger yellowfin down south and 23 at Alijos Rocks. We got 13 wahoo at the Rocks, and a few more on the kelps."

Roy posted several reports. This one was from October 24: "I can't say enough about the weather, but we all know that's not what you tuned in for. You want to know what we caught. Well I'll tell you, large Yellowfin tuna. We had two fish over 150 pounds and lots of 45 to 80-pounders as well, with a few 25-pounders. We also lost a couple of other good ones of 150-plus."

Next day, Roy said, "Today was a beautiful day on the water. We had limit-style Dorado fishing on nice grade fish, but that all took place after we did a number on the 18 to 35-pound yellows. The Yellowtail action started at daybreak and ended at around 8:45 am. Wed had two to six going all the time. I would say the average Yellowtail is a strong 25-pound fish , We also landed a couple of grouper."

Marcus Bondy of Harbison Canyon won first place for a 167.2-pound yellowfin that slurped a sardine on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet 4/0 reel and a Calstar 765 M rod.

Dennis Robnett of Auburn won second place for a 79.6-pounder. He said he used an Accurate 665 two-speed topless reel. RP regular Joe Amagrande, who fished with his wife Connie, bagged a 77.2-pound tuna on a squid under a balloon for third place.

Melanie Stewart of Garden Valley stood in with the jackpot winners. Her honorable mention tuna weighed 153.4 pounds,, and bit a sardine on a 6/0 Mustad 7691 hook. She used 100-pound P-Line, a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.
