South Lake Fish Report 10-15-07

10-15-2007
Jared Smith

Fishing at South Lake was excellent again this week and even with the mild fishing pressure typical of this time of year, nine Alpers were caught including the second biggest fish of the year. Plastics fished along the southwest shoreline or the rock slide is still the hot ticket for the Alpers. White jigs with an orange Berkley Powerworm trailer and Lip Ripper trout worms both produced chunky rainbows this week. Red salmon eggs and fly-lined nightcrawlers are working best for bait anglers fishing the channel by the island. Trolling was excellent this week with olive wooly buggers on top or brown trout Rapalas at two to four colors working best. Well known jig expert Marlon Meade and outdoor writer Dave Finkelstein fished South Lake this week and scored seven Alpers from 3lbs 8oz to 7lbs all using mini-jigs with Berkley Powerworm trailers. Lunkers also came for Don Sasaki of Cypress, CA who landed a 5lb 10oz Alper on a yellow and white Lip Ripper and Jim Clarke of Bakersfield, CA who got a 4lb ???bow using Salmon Eggs. The boat landing at South Lake will continue renting boats through October 21st, possibly longer if the weather holds out.
