This past season has seen at least 50 wahoo caught at Guadalupe Island; probably two or three times as many as were ever taken there in a summer before. When Mike Keating's Spirit of Adventure docked at H & M Landing September 28, three more ???skins" were added to the take.
Seeker president Joe Pfister was aboard with a couple of his reps, as was David Choate, who also reps for Accurate. The Seeker/Soft Steel trip found tough fishing at Guadalupe, with only one large tuna hooked. Sharks got it.
"We hooked eight wahoo down at the South End," said skipper Mike Keating, "and we landed three of ???em."
The best wahoo was caught by young angler Adam Hoit of North Las Vegas, who got his 43.6-pound skin of a black and purple marauder. For his wahoo, Adam stood in with the jackpot winners. His wahoo didn't come on a Seeker rod, however, so Dick Parker of El Segundo won the Seeker Trophy for the best fish on a Seeker; a 39-pound wahoo.
Sandy Fishell of El Centro won first place, for a 31.9-pound yellowtail. She said she got it with a boat rig: a sardine, 4/0 Mustad hook, 80-pound Izorline, a Penn 6/0 reel and a Seeker 6460 XH rod.
Seeker's Randy Penny won second place, for a 28.6-pound yellow, and Dick Parker of El Segundo was third, for a 27.6-pound yellowtail.
