Ranger 85 Fish Report

Frank Ursitti - Ranger 85
2014 has been one of the best seasons on record.
I have been in the industry for over 35 years and grew up in the shadow of the "legendary seasons"
Certainly I have had the good fortune of running boats through the El Niño's of the 80's and 90's, the great Southern California Salmon season of '95, and quite a few epic offshore seasons where the Albacore, Bluefin and Yellowfin were so abundant, all one had to do was look in any direction and "pick" a school to run on.
But 2014 has been different.
It started with a feel to it like no other, and continues to run along seemingly on auto pilot, at full speed.
Springtime was dominated by record scores of Sea Bass and Halibut for the boats fishing the Channel Islands in the north. Yellowtail fishing around the Coronado's for our fleet to the south was the best we have seen in years.
Summer has been full tilt since the first of July, and shows little sign of letting up.
I am constantly asked what the best trip is for me.
It's a great question, and one asked by experienced and novice alike.
This year, with fish being spread far and wide, you can hardly go wrong.
If it's your first time, and you don't have much flexibility with your schedule, try an overnight Ultra Limited Load trip.
These trips depart at 9 pm, fish from sunup until mid-day and head for home.
The one day is the standard offshore trip where by and angler is afforded the opportunity to engage with a game fish and have a great time.
This past Friday while at the helm of the Ranger 85, we had a catch of over 200 fish on a one day trip, with 111 Yellowfin, 87 Yellowtail and 4 Dorado. What an incredible time for a 1 day trip.
Next up are the extended trips, such as a 1.5 Day.
The 1.5 Day trip is a great experience on the water. While the departure time is the same as a one day, the difference being you will fish from sunup to sundown, for a FULL day of fishing. While the rest of the fleet heads for home on their 1 Day trips, you have the balance of the afternoon to find a big school and get in on that late afternoon bite or sundowner.
These past couple of weeks, Capt. Alex onboard the Coral Sea had several of these stops that took him and his anglers into the dark. On their last trip, they boated their final Yellowfin at 930pm! Great job guys!
A 2.5 or 3.5 Day trip is the same as above, however they offer the angler a bit more flexibility in terms of destination, as we have more range with the additional days.
This season the fleet has not had to travel very far to find both numbers of fish, as well as diversity of species such as big Bluefin, Dorado and Yellowfin.
2014 has been the perfect season to head offshore if you have never been tuna fishing. For the more experienced angler, there have been, and continue to be, those trips where your experience shines through as you demonstrate your ability to put fish on in a hurry, or test your stamina on the larger Blues.
What a time it has been, and continues to be.
Whatever your preference or your time allows, get out on the water and get in on the season that will talked about for generations to come.
September and October will present well this year with strong fall fishing.
Look for good numbers of Yellowfin, Dorado, Yellowtail and a surge in the Bluefin bite. The water remains warm and full of life, and I stand by my forecast of Big Eye.
