Tuna Outlook

7-14-2014
Chad Woods

The 2014 tuna fishing season is shaping up to be fantastic. For the first time in a very very long time we saw Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna being caught in May. The offshore scene has been building since May. The fishing for Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail has been phenomenal. The water temps offshore are heating up and we have heard about temps as high as 76 degrees. Just recently we have seen good sized Bluefin Tuna biting in Mexico and US waters. Yesterday we got news of the Bluefin closure in Mexico. Although this may seem like a big blow this should not impact our fishing. There are good sized schools of Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail up and down our coast. Just yesterday we got a report that the Monte Carlo out of 22nd Street Landing catching Yellowfin Tuna on a 1/2 day trip. Over the recent weekend we had a trip on the Eldorado out of Long Beach Sportfishing and we caught Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, and Yellowtail in US waters near the 181. In addition, we got a message from Ernie on the Chubasco II and during a 1/2 day trip they swung out and caught Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail within 5 miles from Mission Bay. We have faith in our leadership at SAC to work towards a solution regarding the Bluefin.

The bottom line is right now we have fantastic fishing and it is occurring all over. Instead of focusing on the negativity surrounding the bad news let's focus on the great opportunities that are still present for us. We are allowed to take Bluefin Tuna caught in US waters.

Let's go Fishing!!!
