Trout Season is here:
After a mild winter, the last week of March and first week of April brought our region rain rain and more rain. Though the majority of our fisheries are spring fed and current drought conditions will not affect our local waterways, it was a welcome relief for Northern California.
Saturday, April 26th was opening day for the 2014 season. The lodge was packed with avid anglers who weren't disappointed with what was rising!
Fishing Tips by Clearwater Guide Jeremy Baker:
Tip for a better set hook- Have you ever thought about the direction you set the hook while fly fishing? Should you set upstream or downstream? Well, in my opinion, you should always try to set downstream. The logic behind it is that most of the time a trout will face up current in a river or a stream. Therefore, if you set the hook with your rod moving in a downstream angle, you will pull your flies into the mouth of the fish rather than upstream and pull your flies out of the fish's mouth. You will hook your fish better and more often than not, get that grip and grin photo we are all striving for.
Knot trick- Have you ever tried to chew the knot off the eye of your fly because your nippers were nowhere to be seen? Instead of possibly chipping a front tooth, try using your thumb nail to get under the bottom of the knot (closest to the hook), squeeze and pull. The knot will completely untie! This trick only works on a standard Clinch knot (not an Improved Clinch) and being that most of us fly anglers use a Clinch, it might one day save you from a trip to the dentist.
