Despite what seems to be a flurry of oarfish sightings this year, the events are still very rare. The most recent encounter was even more unique as the giant, freaky fish from the deep were not only alive, but swimming in the shallows. They eventually beached themselves and died, which is the normal scenario for most of the oarfish that are found.

Ward Michaels, an experienced snook guide from Orlando, Fla., landed a potential world record Pacific snook in Costa Rica.
