South Santiam River has Great Fishing

8-8-2007
The Fly Fishers Place

I'm still getting good Steelhead reports from this often overlooked river. This is a completely hatchery run that was developed in 1960. The run is strong this year! We like to use more winter steelhead type flies on this river. A-leaches (purple, black, pink), prawn-type patterns, and bright colored flies get Chrome. Flies should be bigger than you normally use on summer runs, mainly tied on size 2 to 2 / 0 hooks. Sink tips are helpful here as the river sees traffic and fish tend to hold close to the banks. Flyfishers are in the vast minority on this river, however, if you follow standard river edicit, conflicts with other fisherman are avoided. The spin fisherman are friendly and tend to fish different types of water than flyguys. The River is dropping alot now. Keep an eye on the water gauges, if it gets below 750 cfs, drift boats will have a hard time. Public bank access is limited.
