ROYAL POLARIS SPORTFISHING TRIP UPDATE (021214)
2-13-2014
Royal Polaris Crew
GOOD FIRST DAY!!!
We began officially fishing around 8 something this morning and it didn't take too long for Pete Heimbach to land the first fish of the trip, a tuna of around 70 pounds. There would be many more of that size and bigger before we quit for dinner. Big fish of the day was Chico Leonard's kite fish that weighed 193. Erik Simonsen who is on his first trip of this duration, easily made a personal best with a weighed 170. It wasn't weighed but later in the day I suspect he had a slightly bigger one also. Kevin Shannon who is also a first timer also got a personal best with several fish over 100. The crew estimates that we may have had at least 18 fish over 100 and that makes for a great day especially considering we missed the early morning bite which is often one of the best of the day. There were prizes of course also, as Jack never fails to please. Erik won a Calstar rod blank for first tuna landed over 100 and Del Yaryan won a Royal Polaris jacket for the first wahoo landed. There was only one other wahoo landed today by Gary La Croix and it was a beauty around 50 pounds. Considering that this was our first day of fishing and also that we had an uncooperative current most of time making fishing difficult, I'd have to say we all worked incredibly well together! There was not one major tangle all day and we had an extremely high capture rate landing almost everything that we hooked. Tomorrow morning there will probably be fishermen starting by 2AM and most all of the boat will most likely be hard at it long before the sun comes up so it should or at least could make for an even better day. Weather was outstanding in every one's opinion. Personally I'd forgotten that it's possible to sweat outdoors. I don't miss the below freezing temperatures one bit.
POEM OF THE DAY
At Hurricane I pulled a prank
Snagged the bottom and asked help from Frank
But the skipper's so strong
As he pulled before long
He wound up breaking the Bank.
