South Lake Fish report 08-05-07

Afternoon thunderstorms visited the canyon again this week and it seems to have stirred some of the bigger model Alpers in the lake. Overall fishing was very good and it continues to get better and better the deeper we get into the season. There was a resurgence in the bait bite this week as Chartreuse Powerbait, inflated mealworms and nightcrawlers all worked well near the inlets and off the rock slide. Trolling is still very productive mid lake but with the cooler afternoons the depth it's been a bit harder to pin down their depth. One day they're hanging at 3 colors the next at 10 colors so trollers should experiment to find the fish. Gold, Frog Pattern and Red/Gold Thomas Bouyants are hard to beat at this point and folks are getting a lot of nice fish on the lead core. Fly and a bubble combo with just about any fly in the size 14 range has also been excellent in the early morning and evenings. Maryanne Krpan and her husband Jeff managed to nail four Browns to 2lbs trolling Gold Thomas Bouyants over a few days fishing South Lake. The big Alpers rainbows also made a showing with a whopping 6lb 10oz fish caught on an inflated nightcrawler by Ben Whitwell of Los Angeles. Also tipping the scales was a 6lber caught by Mike Valdez. using a Berkley Power Egg and a worm.
