PUBLIC'S HELP SOUGHT IN WYOMING ELK POACHING CASE
11-8-2013
Wyoming Game & Fish
COKEVILLE-- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is asking the public for their help in finding the person or persons responsible for illegally killing an elk in Elk Hunt Area 104, on Pine Creek, eight miles east of Cokeville.
On Saturday, October 26, Green River Game Warden Linnea Sailor received a report from a hunter that he noticed an elk carcass left abandoned and allowed to waste on the ground at a popular camping area near where he was camped. The popular camping area is located near a group of picnic tables on Pine Creek, north of the ski area. Sailor hopes the public might remember something they saw in the area on or around October 26.
"I interviewed people in hunting camps in the vicinity and obtained some descriptions about the people who had camped close to the abandoned elk carcass," Sailor said. "The persons of interest had a long gooseneck, flatbed trailer and there were two trucks associated with the trailer. One truck was black and could possibly be a Dodge. The other truck was white. The black truck was hooked up to the long flatbed trailer. Individuals in this camp brought in a large, 6x6 bull elk into camp in the white truck that previous Saturday, October 19. The elk head was cut off and the carcass was skinned, halved, and left hanging off the front of the gooseneck trailer. When I found the carcass, it had been abandoned for several days and was not salvageable. In addition, the people in this camp had large campers and a side-by-side ORV."
Anyone with information on this or any wildlife violation may call the Stop Poaching Hotline at 1-877-WGFD-TIP. Tips may be reported online at wgfd.wyo.gov Tips may also be reported to the Green River Game and Fish Office at 1-307-875-3223, Cokeville Game Warden Neil Hymas at 1-307-279-3466, or game warden Linnea Sailor at 1-307-870-5422. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 if the information leads to a conviction.
