That's the whole reason to book a charter in the first place, Right? We are all hoping that we might be lucky enough to haul in that BIG one!

A few weeks ago that's exactly what happened to Picante Customer, Peter Waller. He was out fishing on the famous 35' CABO Express "Salsa", and ended up bringing in a fish to remember.

Peter decided to have his fish mounted which brings up several questions about the subject of Catch and Release, and the best way to mount a trophy fish.

At the time of the catch Peter decided he wanted it mounted, so the Picante crew carefully brought the fish aboard snapped a photo for color reference, measured the length, and released the fish in good condition. Picante has pioneered with King Sailfish Mounts to develop the Release Mount Concept, and over the years many questions have come up about this subject. Here's just a few:

Q: How are Release Mounts produced? Don't you need at least some part of the actual fish?

A: King Sailfish produces mounts using composite materials. Each mount is produced by hand, one at a time, and is then airbrushed according to a photo (optional) of the angler's fish for increased authenticity.

Q: Why release the trophy fish? Are they not good to eat?

A: Although Marlin and other species Are eatible, Billfish numbers are decreasing worldwide. This is the reason that we at Picante have also partnered with The Billfish Foundation to encourage catch and release. Here in Cabo, we and many other charter operators participate in a tagging program, where recaptured tags provide scientific data that helps fisheries managers develop conservation policies to help protect these majestic fish. This is why Cabo is considered the best place to land your first Marlin.

Q: Do you use Circle Hooks, and why are they so important?

A: Here in Cabo, nearly everyone uses circle hooks. We at Picante were one of the first to adopt this relatively new concept. Unlike "J" hooks, circle hooks are designed to lodge in the corner of the fish's mouth. This helps to prevent damage to vital organs.

At the end of the day Peter has not only a great story about his experience, but also has a nice trophy for his Game Room! He has told us that he is extremely thankful for the professional job that King Sailfish Mounts did, and can't wait to come back and add to his collection.
